Khumaar

I heard him for the very first time in the SAARC festival in Delhi, almost 7 years ago. He had purified the whole ambiance with his mellifluous voice by singing a beautiful Raag based song. I didn’t know his name then but what all I could pick up from the excited crowd was that he was an upcoming singer from Assam and he led the band called, East India Company. His powerful voice lingered in my mind for a very long time and that persuaded me to hunt his song down on Youtube but I couldn't not find any information about him over the web, leave aside his songs.

Years passed by, and the urge to find the song he had sung in the festival was lost somewhere, however his fabulous voice and that beautiful melody occupied a permanent place in my heart. A year ago, the tune suddenly poked me once again, as if asking me to track it down. Half-heartedly, I made a random search on YouTube and much to my delight, I managed to find it. The song was called, “Naina Laage” by Angaraag Mahanta, aka Papon. It is purely a classical song accompanied by modern instruments. The hypnotic music and the sonorous voice of Papon add life to the very romantic lyrics. You can listen to Naina Laage here.

Papon has sung many songs in his mother tongue, Assamese, and has toured the world a couple of times. He is one of the few amongst the fresh brigade of singers who has a penchant for creating fusion music, which belongs to no particular genre. Papon made a noticeable debut in Bollywood by lending his vocals to the movie “Dum Maro Dum” for the song “Jiye Kyun”. His other popular songs in Hindi include, “Kyon” from “Barfi”, “Kaun Mera” from “Special26”, “Inne Unne” from Isaaq, and “Maula Sun Le Re” from the much appreciated flick, Madras CafĂ©.

Recently, he sang a romantic number called “Khumaar” on Coke Studio Season 3, which undoubtedly leaves a lasting Khumaar on your mind and soul. The breezy strumming of guitar and the whiskey voice of Papon would drift you off to your dream world. Penned down by Vaibhav Modi, lyrics are simple yet meaningful. I have been playing this song back to back since yesterday and I am still craving more. In Short, "Khumaar" is sweet as a kiss, addictive as coffee, beautiful as a rose, and hypnotic as love. Play the song and close your eyes to enjoy the "Khumaar" to bits!!

Salvaton pe likhi
Karvatien ek hazaar
Dheemi aanch pe jaise
ghulta rahe malhaar
Moondi aankhon mein mehka sa
Beeti raat ka yeh khumaar
Moondi aankhon mein mehka
Du ru ru ru
Dheemi aanch pe jaise
Moondi aankhon mein mehka
Beeti raat ka  khumaar
Kaise kaatoon bairi dopahari
Aave na kyun raina
Kaise main
Kaatoon re
Dopahari…  bairi
Kaise main kaatoon re
Mose na bole re
harjaayee
Pal chin ginn gin
Haaroon main
Hasraton ne kiya
Rukhsaton se qaraar
Thaame aanchal tera
Karti hai intezaar
Kaise kaatoon bairi dopahari
Aave na kyun raina
Kaise main
Kaatoon re
Dopahari…  bairi
Kaise main kaatoon re
Mose na bole re
harjaayee
Pal chin ginn gin
Haaroon main
Mooddaton  sa lage/chale
Har ik lamha
Aanhaton ne kiyaa hai
Jeena bhi dushwaar
Moondi aankhon mein mehka sa
Beeti raat ka  yeh khumaar

Moondi aankhon mein mehka
